New to the Gold Coast

I have recently moved to the beautiful Gold Coast and loving it here! My first shoot here was of beautiful Brooke Kochelak, a natural beauty and fantastic model.

More Makeup Shots For Jen

My daughter Jennifer is working on a portfolio for her makeup and hair. Today she wanted to show her skills with Gothic style makeup.

As with her last shoot, we were working on a very cramped balcony with natural light; luckily it wasn’t raining this time! We also had limited time to get the shots done as once again, we were working whilst her son Jackson was having his afternoon nap.

I used a black sheet pegged up as a background, and a white reflector tilted on the ground towards her to bounce some light back onto her face. On either side of her I used black boards to absorb light and accentuate her cheekbones. This gave the images a slightly more dramatic look to suit her make up.

When we’d finished with Jen’s Gothic look, she scuttled off into her bedroom saying, “Quick before Jackson wakes up, I wan’t to try one more look.” Jen wasn’t gone long before she emerged from her room with another dramatic look. I was suitably impressed.

For the last shots I kept the background black, but replaced the black boards with white to give a softer, flatter look more suited to beauty shots.

A makeup Shoot for Jennifer Bailey

My youngest daughter Jennifer began studying makeup and hairstyling at college a few months ago. She asked me if I would mind taking some photos of various makeup ideas, and hairstyles she had in mind. We had limited time as we had to take the photos during her son Jackson’s nap, and we also had limited space in which to take the photos.

I set up a table, for Jen to sit at and rest her arms on, this also allowed me to place a white board under her face to fill in any shadows. There was filtered light coming through the cloud cover on the left side of her face, and I used a silver reflector to provide fill on her right. The balcony is cream in colour, so the overall lighting was soft in quality. The backdrops were king sized sheets of various colour from Kmart.

I always shoot in RAW. After basic editing and retouching in Adobe Photoshop, I sometimes play a Florabella action or two over my image, and pull the opacity back quite a bit in most cases.

9 year old Kasey

A shoot I set up rather hastily with young Kasey. I used natural window light, starting at iso 800, but soon having to go up to iso 1600. I really love the ambience and that ‘painterly’ feel created when using a higher iso.

After various edits on Photoshop, these are the results.
